PRECIOUS-Gold firm as risk sentiment takes backseat; strong dollar caps gains

* Gold may hover above $1,283/oz support- analyst
* Platinum touch lowest since Feb. 22 at $819/oz
* U.S. dollar hold near more than 2-week high

March 7 Gold prices steadied on Thursday as lacklustre appetite for riskier assets offered some support to the safe-haven metal, while a firmer dollar curbed gains ahead of European Central Bank's (ECB) policy meeting due later in the day.Spot gold was steady at $1,286.25 per ounce, as of 0521 GMT. U.S. GCv1 were down 0.1 percent at $1,286.70 an ounce.The , which tracks the greenback against major currencies, was holding near its more than two-week high posted earlier in the week. USD/
"There is some support for safe-haven assets. Equities in Asia have given up the gains and that reflects the pressure we are seeing on risk assets," said Michael McCarthy, chief market strategist, CMC (NS:) Markets, adding, strong dollar is limiting gains.Asian shares eased on Thursday, with caution prevailing as investors awaited some kind of resolution to Sino-U.S. trade negotiations. Markets are also awaiting the U.S. non-farm payroll data on Friday.Among the other precious metals, palladium dipped 0.2 percent to $1,535.56 per ounce, while silver  traded flat at $15.07 per ounce, after slipping to its lowest since Dec. 27 in the previous session.Platinum dipped 0.3 percent to $824.28 per ounce, after touching its lowest since Feb. 22 at $819 earlier in the session.
